RICHMOND, Va. (JULY 16, 2001) -- In the latest Virginia State Golf Association player
rankings, Keith Decker (Fieldale, Va.) is ranked atop the regular division
with 167 points as of July 5, 2001.
Decker earned the ranking on the strength of a solid 2000 season as well as
his 2001 victories at the Kenridge Cup Invitational (his fourth such title)
as well as the VSGA Four-Ball Championship (with David Partridge). He also
reached the second round of match play at the VSGA State Amateur
championship, before being eliminated in 22 holes by eventual champion Ross
McIntosh (Lorton, Va.). McIntosh, who accumulated 40 points with his State
Am triumph, stands in a tie tenth place with Shane Foster (Earlysville, Va.)
with a total of 50 points.
State Amateur stroke play medalist David Passerell (Scottsville, Va.),
checks in at second with 145 points. Meanwhile, Appomattox native Faber
Jamerson, who was second at the Kenridge Cup Invitational and posted a
runner-up finish at the VSGA Four-Ball Championship (with Allan Strange), is
third (98.5 points). Rounding out the top five are Fairfax native Steve
Marino and Daleville's Matt Mankin, each with 72 points.
State Am semifinalist Eric Hooke (Monterey, Va.) is tied for 18th (40
points), while runner-up Kevin Dillard (Fairfax, Va.) is 23rd (37 points).
In the senior division (age 55 and older), defending Senior Amateur champion
Vinny Giles (Richmond, Va.) again tops the list with 65 points. Following
his second place finishes at the VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship and
the VSGA Senior Four-Ball Championship (with Richard Smith), fellow
Richmonder Stan Fischer is tied for second with 54 points.
Fischer shares
second with VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion Jamie Gough (Fairfax, Va.).
Tom Flory of Alexandria, Va., who captured the VSGA Senior Four-Ball
Championship (with David King), is ranked fourth (51 points). David King
(Sterling, Va.) rounds out the top five with 45 points.
In other news, Decker, Jamerson and Passerell have been selected to
represent the VSGA in the prestigious 35th Annual Pacific Coast Amateur
Championship at Forest Highlands Golf Club, in Flagstaff, Ariz., July
31-August 3, 2001.
Select three-man teams from state golf associations from
around the United States will compete for the Morse Cup team title.
The VSGA Rankings measures performance in national (i.e., United States Golf
Association Championships), state (i.e., VSGA Championships) and regional
competitions (i.e., major invitationals) for amateur players who reside in
Virginia.
Although the rankings may be given consideration in the selection
of Golfer of the Year, they will not be the determining
factor, because so many criteria are considered in selecting players to be
honored.
Rankings will be released on a periodic schedule and will be updated
regularly on the VSGA's Web site (http://www.vsga.org).
A non-profit organization founded in 1904, the VSGA has grown from six clubs
since its inception to more than 280 today. In addition, the VSGA's
membership numbers more than 85,000.
The VSGA promotes and conserves the
best interests of the game as embodied in its honorable traditions through
its championships, handicap program, course rating system, VIP and
scholarship program as well as many other services.
Player rankings for the top 25 spots in the regular and as well as the
senior division follow.
